TRD models give wings to the hawk-like beak of other Camrys. It adds 19-inch black wheels, a front splitter, rear diffuser, and a black roof, while the XSE keeps the sporty wheels and sport suspension, and comes with a dual exhaust tipped with chrome. From there, the Camry tames down its creases and kinks. The interior overlaps with one side of the dash cascading toward the driver’s side, and separates the front seats with a small knee wall on the passenger side, like in some high end sports coupes.
Skipping over the base but competent 203-hp 2.5-liter inline-4, Toyota pushes sport with one of the few remaining 3.5-liter V-6 engines in the segment. It makes 301 hp and, when coupled with the sport suspension on XSE and TRD models, it’s surprisingly spry. Despite that, the 208-hp Hybrid with a 2.5-liter inline-4 and two motors fits the bill for a calm, quiet, and practical sedan. Front-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic is standard on gas models, but all-wheel drive is available across the board.
The interior of the Camry seats five, and the front seats are roomy and comfy enough, but the head room trims a bit for rear seat passengers. Still, 38.0 inches of leg room in back provides ample space for average adults, and the 15.1 cubic feet of space in the trunk in hybrid or gas models is above average for a sedan.
Earning top marks in the industry’s toughest crash-test criteria, the Camry is a perennial Top Safety Pick+ recipient from the IIHS and gets a top five-star designation from the NHTSA. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, a rear-seat reminder, and automatic high beams.
