You can’t get any better than these cute monsters made out of Rice Krispie treats.

They are so easy to make that a kid can do it. No, really, a couple of kids made all of these.

You can really use your creativity to make different designs or you can go simpler and just put the eyeballs on them.

How are you going to make your Monsters?

KEY TO SUCCESS #1 – CLASSIC RICE KRISPIE TREATS

These cute Halloween Monter Treats start with a batch of classic Rice Krispie Treats.

One of my biggest tips on making Rice Krispie Treats is to butter your pan very well so that your Rice Krispie Treats won’t stick and also to add some extra yummy butter flavor.

We’re using a larger rimmed baking sheet for these monsters to make them thinner, but you can use a 9×13-inch baking dish if you want your Rice Krispie Monsters to be thicker.

If you’re not much for making Rice Krispie Treats on your own, you can certainly grab some packaged Rice Krispie Treats and just use these directions to decorate them!

The mini Rice Krispie Treats would be so cute dressed up as monsters!

KEY TO SUCCESS #2 – COLOR THE ALMOND BARK

When I’m making treats like this, I highly recommend going with Almond Bark or candy coating instead of true white chocolate.

The almond bark is so much easier to work with and is less likely to seize up and become crumbly.

You still have to be careful when coloring the almond bar.

Here are a couple of important tips –
  1. Use gel food coloring, not liquid
  2. Add a 1/2 teaspoon of oil or shortening when adding the food coloring
Almond bark is not supposed to have any liquids added to it. The bit of oil will help protect the almond bark from the liquid in the food coloring. (Even with gel food coloring, it’s water-based.)

There are specific oil-based gel food coloring preparation that you could use with your white chocolate, but the gel food coloring bottles that most stores carry are water-based.

You could also use the candy melts that are pre-colored. You can find these at Michael’s craft store or Hobby Lobby. They are also available on Amazon.

If using the pre-colored candy melts, you do not need to add the additional oil that is mentioned in the recipe. The oil is specifically to use with the water-based gel food coloring.

KEY TO SUCCESS #3 – MAKE ME A MONSTER

Let me just start off by saying that the decorating does not have to be perfect!

It is not going to matter if your colored almond bark is not perfectly smooth on your monster.

They are supposed to be imperfect. That’s what makes them so cute.

One key to making these Rice Krispie Monsters is starting with Rice Krispie Treats that are cold from the fridge.

Starting with cold Rice Krispie Treats will help them keep their shape when you start smearing the warm almond bark on them.

You can start by dipping the top of the Rice Krispie Treat in the almond bar, but I found that using a butter knife to slather on the almond bark was much easier.

You can use either method that is easiest for you. Again, it does not have to be perfect.

The kids decorated our Monsters and I think they did a fantastic job! They had so much fun with this one.

For the decorations, you will need some candy eyeballs. Beyond that, you can use pretty much anything that you have on hand.

The candy eyeballs can be found at your local Walmart or at many craft stores.

I have an enormous collection of sprinkles that I have collected over the years and that stash served us well with this project.

We also used some Smarties, Starburst candies that we cut into shapes, marshmallows, and chocolate chips.

MAKING MONSTERS IS A FANTASTIC PARTY ACTIVITY

We love making or decorating treats as a party activity when we’re having people over. This is an especially good activity to do with kids.

Here are some tips to make your monsters decorating a fun activity:
  1. Make the Rice Krispie Treats in advance. They need to firm up in the refrigerator so this needs to be done before the party.
  2. Give each person a paper place to decorate their monster on. This will help control the number of sprinkles that end up on the floor.
  3. Enlist an adult to help smear the almond bark on the monsters. Older kids and adults could definitely do this part themselves, but smaller kids might find adding the sprinkles and decorations to be more fun. (And less mess for you to clean up!)
  4. Relax and have fun. They’re just Monsters.
The Rice Krispie Treat Monsters need to dry for maybe 15-20 minutes before being eaten – if any of the kiddos can wait that long!

It would be super cute to have little clear treat bags so that the kids could take their monster home with them.
