This classic Muddy Buddies recipe starts by making a rich chocolate and peanut butter glaze then pouring it over a big bowl full of Chex cereal.
Next, the chocolate and peanut butter cereal is coated with a thick layer of powdered sugar.
Oh yum!
You can customize the mix-ins in this recipe to your liking.
You can substitute Reese’s Pieces for the peanut butter M&M’s. Plain or peanut M&M’s would be really good in this mix.
In place of the Oreo cookies, you could use Keebler Fudge Stripe cookies or mini Vanilla Wafers.
The first step to making these Muddy Buddies is melting together the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter.
Place the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in a large microwave-safe bowl.have
Keep in mind that you will be stirring 9 cups of cereal into this bowl so make sure it’s large enough to accommodate that much cereal.
I have a very large 4-quart glass bowl that I use when I am mixing up an oversized recipe like this.
Heat on high power for 1 minute then stir the chocolate mixture well.
Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring between each one, until the chocolate mixture is fully melted and smooth.
Next, gently stir in the Chex cereal. You can use any variety of Chex cereal that you like. I used Rice Chex and it worked very well.
Use a plastic spatula to gently fold the cereal into the chocolate and peanut butter mixture. You want to be careful not to crush the cereal too much.
The Chex cereal is pretty sturdy, but it pays to be gentle so that you will have mostly full pieces of cereal in your Muddy Buddies.
We’re going to be putting our coated cereal into two gallon-sized zip-top baggies then adding in the powdered sugar.
Spoon the coated cereal into the plastic baggies then add in half of the powdered sugar into each bag.
You will put 3/4 cup of powdered sugar in each bag.
Next, seal the zip-top bag and shake it all around to coat the cereal in the powdered sugar.
It will only take a minute or two to get the cereal fully powdered.
Finally, pour the cereal out onto waxed paper and allow it to cool completely.
The mix-ins are what really sets this Muddy Buddy recipe apart from all the rest.
We’re adding a little salty, a little sweet, and a whole lot of yum.
- Oreo Cookies
- Pretzels
- Brach’s candy corn
- Brach’s mallowcreme pumpkins
- orange Peanut Butter M&M’s
For the pretzels, you can use any variety that you have on hand. I used the tiny twists.
Whichever pretzels you use, break them into pieces. Not super tiny pieces but maybe in half or in thirds.
For the Oreos, you can use any variety that you prefer. I used the classic chocolate ones.
Break the Oreo cookies into quarters. You don’t want to crush them. Just use your fingers to break them up into pieces.
You can substitute a different variety of M&M’s if you can’t find the Peanut Butter M&Ms or just don’t prefer them.
I specifically picked out the orange M&M’s to go with the color scheme. It would also be cute if you added in some yellow M&M’s or the brown ones.
You can really make this Muddy Buddy snack mix your own by substituting different candies or different M&M flavors.
