The Best Upcoming Games

Here are the biggest and best new games coming out this year and beyond for every console and PC, from The Last of Us 2 to the much-delayed Cyberpunk 2077

2020 is going to be a big year for games. There's two new console launches to look forward to, in the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but before that we're still getting some of the biggest games of this generation, from The Last of Us Part II to Cyberpunk 2077.
It's tough keeping up with all the new releases, so we've decided to do the hard work for you and round up all of the biggest and best games on the way this year, next year, and even a few that might be further off than that. We've done our best to include games from across all the main consoles and PC, listed in release date order.

Minecraft Dungeons
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC
  • Release date: 26 May 2020
This is Minecraft as you've never known it before: a four-player dungeon crawler, in which players team up to explore procedurally generated dungeons. There's combat, looting, and gear to grab. There's one pretty unique twist too: there are no classes, with your weapon & armour combo dictating your skills and strengths, making it easier to adjust your team dynamic and playstyle on the fly.

The Last Of Us Part II
The Last Of Us was one of the greatest video games of all time, so the sequel certainly has a lot to live up to. Set five years after its predecessor, Ellie and Joel have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming, and found peace amongst a small community. However, an event will turn all of this on its head, putting Ellie through a difficult and traumatic journey. With upgraded gameplay, new weapons and a compelling story, we think this is going to be something special.

Delayed multiple times already, The Last of Us 2 was finally set to launch in May 2020 but was delayed once more to June. Keep up to date with all The Last Of Us Part II news.

Ghost of Tsushima
  • Platforms: PS4
  • Release date: 17 July 2020
  • Pre-order: GAME
This PlayStation exclusive is an open-world game that puts you in the shoes of a Japanese samurai in the 1200s, defending the island of Tsushima from the invading Mongol Empire. Expect fierce melee combat, lots of stealth, and some seriously stunning visuals.

Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope
  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
  • Release date: Summer 2020
  • Pre-order: GAME
The Dark Pictures Anthology is getting its second game this summer: Little Hope. The follow-up to 2019's Man of Medan will adopt the same interactive narrative structure, with the same pair of online and offline multiplayer modes too. It also features another famous face: Will Poulter.

Valorant
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release date: Summer 2020
Valorant is an upcoming free-to-play FPS from League of Legends developer Riot Games. It hopes to pair the tight, fast-paced tactical shooting of Counter-Strike with the cartoonish aesthetic and unique, powered characters of Overwatch, while prioritising some of the most responsive server tech in the industry. If it all works out right, Valorant could be absolutely massive.

Marvel's Avengers
  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Google Stadia
  • Release date: 4 September 2020
  • Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US
After Marvel's Spider-Man was a smash hit on the PS4, Marvel Games are taking things a step further. That's right - The Avengers are assembling on the big consoles. Experience all the different super powers across some of the most iconic moments from the Marvel comics. Plus, we'll also be getting the addition of fan favourite Kamala Khan, AKA Ms. Marvel. The developers have also promised that this game will be optimised for more content for the next few years, making this superhero title an investment for gamers all around.

Cyberpunk 2077
  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Google Stadia
  • Release date: 17 September 2020
  • Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US
CD Projekt Red is going big with its follow-up to The Witcher trilogy: a massive open-world, first-person, cyberpunk sci-fi game based on a cult tabletop RPG. Known about for years but only revealed for the first time at E3 2018, Cyberpunk looks like one of the most ambitious RPGs ever made, combining dense progression systems, branching narratives, and fast-paced FPS combat into one sprawling whole. Oh yeah, and it features the breathtaking Keanu Reeves. We're ready to move to Night City now, please.

Watch Dogs Legion
  • Platforms: PS4, Google Stadia, Xbox One, PC
  • Release date: Q3/Q4 2020
  • Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US
One of the most anticipated games of 2020 has unfortunately been delayed until the latter half of the year. The third instalment in the Watch Dog series, this will be set in a post-Brexit London in which players have a choice of five main storylines and numerous protagonists. Each character's stats will be influenced by their backstory, and allegedly you'll be able to recruit and play as any NPC in the game. Watch Dogs Legion will also feature multiplayer, though we're still waiting for more information on this.

Gods & Monsters
  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Google Stadia
  • Release date: 2020
  • Pre-order: GAME
The studio behind the renowned Assassins Creed: Odyssey are coming with a new storybook adventure that's giving us big Zelda vibes. According to the trailer, you'll be on a quest to save some Greek gods, and at some point face off against a big freaky looking bird creature. Other than that, we don't know too much yet. But, we're pretty hopeful that this'll be one to watch.

Halo Infinite
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PC, Xbox Project Scarlett
  • Release date: Holiday 2020
  • Pre-order: Amazon
The first game on this list for the next-gen consoles, Halo Infinite, will mark the return of Master Chief, but also allegedly a spiritual reboot for the entire franchise - which is very intriguing. As of yet we have no footage of any gameplay elements; the trailer above was more just an announcement that the game is a thing. But stay tuned.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla
  • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, PC, Stadia
  • Release date: Holiday 2020
  • Pre-order: Ubisoft
Assassin's Creed looks set to be one of the first games to hit next-gen consoles, with the Viking-set Valhalla launching across basically every platform except the poor Nintendo Switch. Set between Norway and Britain, you'll play a Viking warrior trying to settle down and survive against the English, with new features including developing your settlement, raiding, and customising raiders to send into your friends' games.

Rainbow Six: Quarantine
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
  • Release date: 2020/21
  • Pre-order: Amazon
This standalone Rainbow Six title is inspired by the limited-time Outbreak event in Rainbow Six: Siege, and sees teams of three players work together against a technological parasite. It's co-op PvE, rather than PvP like Siege, and could be a big hit if it breaks beyond the core Siege fan base.

Iron Man VR
We've all looked at Tony Stark and thought, 'Man, I wish I had one of those Iron Man suits for myself'. Well, now you can. Iron Man VR is coming to PS VR,  in which you play the billionaire superhero who is facing off against a ghost of his past. You'll be able to use the repulsor jets to shoot and control the flight movement for the suit, and as you progress through the game you'll be able to add on nifty upgrades to make your suit even more advanced.

Originally set to launch in spring, this has been delayed indefinitely over the coronavirus pandemic, with no release date set for now.

Dying Light 2
  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
  • Release date: Unknown
  • Pre-order: GAME or Gamestop
Dying Light proved to be a pretty great zombie game, and the sequel will only build on this even further. Advancements in the plot, combat gameplay and world should give you everything you need to go out and face the undead. The game will also be getting a Left 4 Dead 2 crossover, including using a guitar as a weapon to slay zombies with - pretty rockin'.

It was previously set for a spring 2020 launch, but in January it was delayed and right now there's no set release date - though hopefully we still see it some time this year.

Age of Empires 4
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release date: Unknown
After remastering the original Age of Empires in 4K, Microsoft has recruited RTS legends Relic to move the franchise forward with Age of Empires IV. We don't know much about it yet, including when it'll come out, but expect classic historical strategy with confirmed armies including the English and the Mongols.

Skull and Bones
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
  • Release date: Unknown
Remember how great the naval combat was in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag? Well this essentially expands that into a full game in its own right, as you lead a pirate crew in the Indian Ocean with your very own customisable ship. There'll be both single-player and 5v5 multiplayer whenever the game eventually comes out.

Beyond Good and Evil 2
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
  • Release date: Unknown
  • Pre-order: GAME
This long-awaited follow-up to the cult classic action RPG has been in and out of development for years, and it's pretty clear that creator Michael Ancel is being nothing if not ambitious with the sequel. There's a lot that's still unknown, but confirmed details include that it's technically a prequel, it'll have a seamless open world with a whole star system to explore, and will include both ground action and controllable spaceships.

Diablo 4
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
  • Release date: Unknown
  • Pre-order: GAME
Finally revealed after years of leaks and rumours, it's no real surprise that Blizzard is working on a fourth Diablo game. Set years after Diablo 3 this includes a new big bad - Lilith - and five classes at launch, including the Sorceress, Barbarian, and Druid. There'll be both solo play and multiplayer, though it's all online, with dedicated areas of the huge open world map for PvP combat too.

Overwatch 2
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC
  • Release date: Unknown
  • Pre-order: GAME
Overwatch 2 marks a shift in focus for the series, with a greater emphasis on the PvE modes that have proved popular in the base game, and less on the 6v6 multiplayer combat where it made its name. Expect new maps, loot, and customisation options, with all the loot you've already earned in the first game even carrying over into the second title - and  plenty of the new game's updates even working their way backwards into the first Overwatch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2
  • Platforms: Switch
  • Release date: Unknown
Breath of the Wild is arguably still the best game on the Switch - and one of the best games of the decade, period - so we were pretty relieved when Nintendo announced a sequel at E3 2019. We don't know when it'll come out, or what to expect, but fans are hoping for Zelda herself to be playable in some form - and either way for it to be as radical and weird a follow-up as Majora's Mask was for Ocarina of Time way back when.

Metroid Prime 4
  • Platforms: Switch
  • Release date: Unknown
We barely know a thing about Metroid Prime 4, but that won't stop us getting excited. First announced way back in 2017, in 2019 Nintendo announced it was starting from scratch, and moving the game from Bandai Namco back to original series devs Retro Studios. The original Prime trilogy was absolutely phenomenal, so we have the highest hopes for the fourth game - but know we might still have a while to wait.

BioShock 4
  • Platforms: Unknown
  • Release date: Unknown
We don't know much about BioShock 4, and there's no trailer yet. But it is coming, and that's something. Publisher 2K created a whole new studio - Cloud Chamber - to develop the title, which has already been in the works for a couple of years. Original creator Ken Levine isn't involved, but then he didn't touch BioShock 2 either, and that was unexpectedly brilliant.
